Happy Veterans Day! Faith Under Fire — A Hero’s Story: Sergeant Alvin York
Today we pause to honor every man and woman who stood for freedom — not just with courage, but with faith forged in fire.
A Hero’s Story: Sergeant Alvin York — From Reluctant Soldier to Bold Believer
It’s 1917. The world is at war. Deep in the hills of Tennessee, a poor farmer named Alvin York gets drafted into the Army.
York is a new Christian, passionate about Jesus’ words:
“Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9).
He struggles with the command, “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13) — and even asks to be excused from fighting.
But after weeks of prayer and reading his Bible, York hears a different call — not to harm, but to protect the innocent.
He wrote in his journal, “I prayed and prayed, and I knew the Lord would help me if I went.”
In October 1918, York’s patrol is ambushed in France. Bullets fly. His leaders fall.
Under heavy fire, York prays Psalm 23:1:
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Then, crawling through mud and chaos, he takes action — saving 132 men and turning the tide of battle.
When reporters asked how he did it, York replied, “It was not me. It was the Lord.”
Though he received the Medal of Honor, his courage came from faith, not fury.
As Isaiah 40:31 says:
“Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.”
The Faith of Our Veterans
This Veterans Day, we honor heroes like Alvin York — believers who carried faith into battle, trusting God to turn fear into courage and weakness into victory.
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer.” — Psalm 18:2
“Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
Their bravery reminds us that real courage starts in the heart that fully trusts God.
A Call for Us Today
Our generation faces different battles — spiritual ones.
But the same God who strengthened Alvin York still empowers us to stand for truth, fight for souls, and carry the gospel to our friends and schools.
“Put on the whole armor of God… so that you may be able to stand your ground.” — Ephesians 6:11
Let’s rise with that same faith and courage — to pray, to love, to serve, and to bring Jesus to our generation.
With gratitude and honor,
