Unshakeable Peace in the Valley of Trial

Horatio Spafford was no stranger to suffering. A successful Chicago lawyer and supporter of evangelist D.L. Moody, he had already lost his four-year-old son to disease and suffered crushing financial ruin in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Yet, the loss of his daughters threatened to drown his faith entirely.

Spafford’s response mirrors that of the Shunammite woman in 2 Kings 4. After her long-awaited son suddenly collapsed and died in her arms, she laid him on a bed, closed the door, and rode desperately to find the prophet Elisha. When Elisha’s servant ran to meet her in her anguish and asked how her family was doing, she uttered an astonishing declaration of faith:

"Please run now to meet her & say to her, 'Is it going well for you? Is it going well for your husband? Is it going well for the child?' Then she answered, 'It is going well.'" (2 Kings 4:26)

Trusting the God Who Raises the Dead

How could she say "It is well" while her only son lay dead? How could Horatio Spafford write "It is well with my soul" while floating directly over the watery grave of his children?

Because true faith is not the absence of grief—it is an anchor dropped in the absolute sovereignty and goodness of God. They knew that their circumstances did not change God’s character. They believed in the God who brings beauty from ashes, joy from mourning, and life out of dead places.

As we pray and intercede for revival across a culture that often resembles a valley of dry, dead bones, we cannot let present trials or delays shake our resolve. Revival is not birthed in easy seasons; it is birthed when believers stand in the middle of heartbreak and declare with steadfast, Spirit-led assurance that God is still on the throne.

Our Prayer Focus Today

As you press into prayer and fasting today, align your heart with these intercessory targets:

  • Supernatural Peace in Sorrow: Asking the Holy Spirit to comfort those enduring severe grief, loss, and emotional distress, filling them with peace that surpasses understanding.

  • A Settled Soul: Praying for believers to anchor their minds and emotions in Christ, remaining unmoved by volatile circumstances or bad news.

  • Steadfast Assurance of Sovereignty: Interceding for a deep, unshakeable confidence in God's authority over every storm and trial.

  • Enduring Faith Under Fire: Asking God to strengthen believers in hard places so that their faith remains pure, tested, and unyielding.

  • Persistent Intercession for Awakening: Praying that the Church refuses to give up praying for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, trusting God to bring spiritual life to dead places.
