Nicolaus Zinzendorf and the Herrnhut Awakening
In the early 1700s, Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf opened his estate in Germany to religious refugees. Moravians, Lutherans, Anabaptists, and Catholics flooded into the village of Herrnhut. Yet, with diverse backgrounds came intense theological disputes and sharp division.
Zinzendorf did not abandon the vision. He went house to house, using Scripture to minister to families, pleading for unity in the Spirit and relentless allegiance to Christ alone.
On August 12, 1727, as the community repented of division and sought the Lord together, the Holy Spirit fell upon Herrnhut in power.
From Unbroken Prayer to Global Impact
That outpouring birthed an unprecedented commitment: a 24/7 continuous prayer vigil that filled every hour of the week, non-stop, for over a century.
Out of that unceasing intercession came an urgent passion for the unreached. The Moravians began sending missionaries to the ends of the earth—to the West Indies, Greenland, Africa, and the Americas—pioneering Protestant cross-cultural missions.
In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus established the mandate that drove Zinzendorf's entire life:
"All authority in heaven & on earth has been given to Me. Go, therefore, & make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father & the Son & the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you..."
Zinzendorf lived by a singular, piercing motto: "Preach the Gospel, die, & be forgotten." He understood that true revival is not built on human fame or clever programs, but on believers who yield their ambition to advance the fame of Jesus.
God is extending that same invitation to us today. He is calling us to drop petty divisions, commit to unceasing prayer, and go make disciples of all nations.
